Quick answers to the questions we hear most, plus where to find deeper help.
These are the questions we hear most from families exploring homeschooling. For the complete list, including questions about our vendor directory, events, and shop, visit our full FAQ page.
Is homeschooling legal in California? Yes. Families typically homeschool through a public charter school, a Private School Satellite Program, or independently by filing a Private School Affidavit. See our Charter School vs PSA vs PSP guide for details.
Do I need to be a certified teacher? No. California does not require homeschool parents to hold a teaching credential.
Will my kids be socialized? Socialization is one of homeschooling's strengths when you plug into community: co-ops, park days, field trips, sports, scouting, and arts programs. Our Groups and Co-ops directory and Events page are the fastest way to find them locally.
How do I know my child is learning? Mix observation, work samples, and informal assessments. Charter families follow their school's assessment process. Independent families typically keep a portfolio of work.
Can my child go back to school later? Yes. Placement is decided by the receiving school, usually based on records and a placement conversation. Keeping a simple portfolio makes transitions smooth.
How much does it cost? It ranges from nearly free (charter school, which can even fund your materials) to several thousand dollars a year for an independent approach. Your biggest line item is usually curriculum.
